Local Winter Games
Special Events
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

The 2007 Area 22 Special Olympics were held on January 24 at Apple Mountain in Freeland and were a great
success. The Tittabawassee Valley Fife and Drum Corps opened the games with the playing of the national
anthem for the 220 athletes and their volunteers.  Corps members Bobbi Baker, Ann Martin, Jim McMahan,
Josh Reynolds, and Wesley Reynolds shared their talents with the gathering.

Competitions during the day included downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.  Other
activities for athletes and their volunteers included tobogganing, snowmobile rides, broomball, parachute,
and tug-a-war.

This is the 20th year Apple Mountain has provided the venue for the Area 22 Winter Games for Special
Olympics.  In addition to the mountain, and ski lodge, Apple Mountain provides the downhill skiing equipment,
the ski patrol and ski instructors to assist during the day’s activities.  Apple Mountain’s staff prepared and
served lunch for the 800 athletes, staff, and volunteers who attended the games.

This year there were a record number of volunteers assisting as event volunteers and one-to-one volunteers
with an athlete.  The 379 volunteers were from the following schools and organizations:  Boy Scout Troop 321
(10), Saginaw Valley State University teaching candidates (7), Carrollton High School (9), St. Charles High
School (31), Hemlock High School (20), Swan Valley High School (26), Heritage High School (10), Nouvel
High School (109), Merrill High School (23), Valley Lutheran High School (18), Birch Run High School (13),
Bridgeport High School (19), Freeland High School (49), Mackinaw Academy from Saginaw Township (36).

The Stable in Old Town Saginaw provided all the cross-country ski equipment for the 157 athletes that tried
that sport.  The Stable has provided the ski equipment for many years allowing the athletes to have the most
up to date equipment.

MMR provided an ambulance and staff for the day to be on site incase of a medical emergency beyond the
expertise of the Ski Patrol.  Fortunately they were not put into service as no accidents occurred during the day
of competition and fun.

Members of Moose Lodge 82 have been busy during the past year sewing and knitting blankets, hats,
scarves, and gloves that they donated to the athletes who were not adequately prepared for a day outdoors in
January.  We thank them for their time and talent in making these items and being present to pass them out,
making sure the athletes were dressed warmly for their day outdoors.

Athletes for the 2007 Winter Games came from the following programs:  Saginaw Public Schools-South,
Saginaw Township elementary schools, Saginaw Township’s Heritage High School, Carrollton Middle and
High Schools, Hemlock Middle and High Schools, the Intermediate School District’s Millet Learning Center,
and Transitions Center, Saginaw County Community Ties South.
